Summary: | A chelating polymer (DOW 2N or XFS 43084) was loaded with copper(II) to form an anion exchanger that was capable of interacting with various industrially and environmentally important trace contaminants in water and wastewaters. The contaminants studied were phosphate, selenite, arsenate, sulphide, phthalate, oxalate, cyanide, ethylenediaminetetraacetate and various organic derivatives. As a comparison, IRA-900, IRA-958 and IRC-718 polymers, were used as reference exchangers. The preference of the DOW 2N polymeric anion ligand exchanger to anionic ligands was ascribed to concurrent electrostatic and Lewis acid-base type interactions and the exchanger was amenable to efficient regeneration with brine such that more than 90 per cent of the phosphate was recovered in less than 10 bed volumes. |
