Summary: | Certain of the physiologic mechanisms that control calcium metabolism have also been shown experimentally to alter absorption and tissue distribution of lead in experimental animals. Interactions between lead and iron are far less well understood. Much of what is known was learned from studies of low-income urban children, in whom iron deficiency and lead toxicity are both prevalent. Iron deficiency results in increased absorption and tissue retention of lead, but the metabolic mechanisms involved are not nearly as well understood as those for calcium. |
