Description
Summary:The role of dissolved organic matter in the late spring and summer blooms caused by eutrophication along the Black sea coast is discussed. Primary production and uptake of glucose and amino acids mixtures and their temporal and space distribution during a large bloom of Exuviaella cordata was studied. The results obtained suggest that the Exuviaella cordata activity takes up amino acids and glucose. In the case of nitrogen deficiency, the ecological effect of this phenomena is an acceleration of nitrogen recycling. This could be one of the reasons for high primary production (about 30 g carbon per m3.d) measured during the culmination of the bloom.
