Summary: | A study of the mean pH value of rainwater near Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, showed that the pH value was lower and the sulphate content higher in downwind samples than in upwind samples. Oxidation of rain water with hydrogen peroxide increased the sulphate content and reduced the pH value in downwind samples, but had no effect on these parameters in upwind samples. These findings, together with studies by other investigators, suggested that sulphur dioxide contributed significantly to downwind acidity but that, in most upwind samples, a source of hydrogen ions other than mineral acids may be important in contributing to the acidity of rainfall. |
