Summary: | Results are reported from pilot-scale studies on the efficiency of phosphorus removal in a PhoStrip plant treating a mixture of domestic sewage and piggery waste water, containing up to 100 mg phosphorus per litre. A flow diagram of the pilot plant is included. Good removals of both phosphorus and nitrogen could be achieved in this process. Aerobic luxury phosphorus uptake unaffected by the initial phosphorus concentration or by relatively high initial concentrations of nitrogen and COD. The importance of a dual phosphorus sink, with phosphorus-enriched surplus activated sludge and chemically precipitated calcium phosphate, in producing an effluent with a low phosphorus content, was highlighted by the study. |
