Summary: | Pollution of natural waters from urban areas can be significant. Toxic substances, such as heavy metals or organic priority pollutants, are of particular interest in this respect. Preliminary investigations at four different stations within the Karlsruhe drainage area indicated that these substances may appear at high concentration levels. The Federal Ministry for Research and Technology is financing a project for the development of sampling techniques and strategies in order to investigate the mechanisms of accumulation and discharge of such pollutants from urban areas draining into the public sewer system and their possible contribution to natural waters. Special sampling devices had to be developed for the street inlet structure. |
