Description
Summary:Flotation of suspended matter with a cationic surfactant (cetyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride) was followed, firstly, by coprecipitation with iron(III) hydroxide at pH 7 and, secondly, by flotation with anionic surfactants (sodium oleate and sodium dodecyl sulphate). This removed suspended solids and separated humic and fulvic acids. Iron(III) hydroxide was dissolved in 2 M hydrochloric acid leaving acid-insoluble humic acid to be collected by ultrafiltration. Absorption spectra, molecular weight distribution and complexing ability were determined, after dissolving humic acid in potassium hydroxide solution. Flotation decreased the time needed for separation to a fifth of the time required with normal filtration procedures.
