Summary: | Filtered (0.45 um) samples of groundwater and surface waters from various locations in the U.S.A. were irradiated with UV or sunlight. Samples were analysed by a fluorimetric method relating peroxide concentration to an enzyme-mediated depletion of scopoletin fluorescence. Light flux was determined by ferric oxalate actinometry. Chloride ion concentrations, DOC and hydrogen peroxide accumulation rates are tabulated for 8 groundwaters, 7 filtered surface waters and 2 unfiltered surface waters. Quantum yields of peroxide accumulation for 6 waters at wavelengths between 287.5 and 700 nm are tabulated. Peroxide accumulation rate was related to the concentration of light absorbing organic substances. There are 32 references. |
