Summary: | Eighteen experimental plots were sampled at each of two permanent grassland sites which had received surface applications of liquid, digested and thickened sludge from 1978 to 1981. Sludge was analysed for cadmium, chromium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, lead and zinc after each of four autumn applications. Soil cores were taken to 30 cm depth and divided into seven sections. All metals migrated to a depth of 10 cm, but an average of 87 per cent of each metal stayed in the upper 5 cm of the soil. Sampling to a depth of 5-7.5 cm would be most suitable for long-term monitoring of grassland treated with surface applications of sludge. |
