Description
Summary:Samples of fish, white suckers (Catastomus commersoni), were collected from 3 sites in eastern Erie lake and their stomach contents were analysed to determine whether the diet of bottom-feeding fish contained significant amounts of PAH, as part of a wider investigation into the exposure of feral fish to carcinogens. The amounts of PAH found, varied depending on where the fish was caught. However, although the fish studied could be metabolizing PAH to carcinogens, there was no direct link between the PAH in their stomach, and the incidence of neoplasia observed. Feral fish could be useful monitors for environmental pollution, and for providing early warnings of potential health hazards to man.
