Summary: | The ability of partial pre-acidification of carbohydrate-containing wastewaters to increase stability and maximal turnover characteristics in anaerobic digestion processes was investigated. The influent was a 1 per cent (w/v) glucose solution in a mineral salts medium, imposing carbon-limited growth conditions. Small amounts of volatile fatty acids (3-13 per cent on a COD basis) added to the glucose medium increased the maximal specific COD-conversion rates of the sludge during continuous loading and after shock loading. |
