Description
Summary:During the past 3 yr, meteorological anomalies have occurred with considerable regularity along the west coast of Florida. On 13 January 1981, a well-developed area of high pressure over southern Mississippi resulted in one of the most severe freezes recorded in the 20th century. Temperatures ranging from -7°C in the southern part of the region to -13°C in the northern section were officially recorded. Substantial agricultural damages were sustained, with the greatest financial losses occurring in the citrus industry. In addition, the freeze damaged many areas of natural vegetation, especially mangrove.
