description | Following an epidemic in 1980 of Legionnaires' disease which was linked to a nearby air-conditioning cooling tower, the Vermont Department of Health developed the needed laboratory capability to test for Legionella pneumophila and has been actively testing a wide variety of environmental samples for this organism. In investigating the report of a possible legionellosis outbreak at an inn in Vermont, a routine epidemiolgic investigation was done and environmental samples were collected from the water system, recreational whirlpool spa, swimming pool, showerheads, and dehumidifiers. The samples were analyzed for L. pneumophila by both direct culture and guinea pig passage. L. pneumophila was isolated from the recreational whirlpool at this inn and from two other whirlpools at nearby inns. |
