Summary: | Feasibility studies are reported on the production of protein from pineapple cannery effluents where the fruit is grown all the year round. The effluents are rich in sugar and nutrients and when supplemented with ammonia, heat treated and centrifuged, provide a good yield of the yeasts Candida utilis and Hansenula sydowiorum. The treatment also achieves a 90 per cent reduction in BOD5 in the effluent. The amino acid composition compares favourably with FAO standards and is suitable for cattle feed. Ammonia at 0.3 per cent level gives maximal cell biomass and protein. |
