Summary:The benthic communities established on the soft strata off the outlet of the main Marseilles sewer were investigated. The study was carried out approximately a year and a half after the diversion of a polluted river into the sewer. Although the quantity of pollutants was not appreciably reduced , a decrease in the diversity and similarity indices, and an increase in the dominance of muddy substratum species was observed, indicating a degradation of the communities.
