Summary: | Experiments are described to evaluate the effects of the pesticides malathion, carbaryl and lindane on the respiration of fish over a 48 hour period. Oxygen consumption was determined and liver and brain tissues analysed for respiratory enzymes. The rate of oxygen consumption during the first 24 hours of exposure increased, then decreased during later periods. Similar decreases in the activity levels of the respiratory enzymes, succinate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase were also recorded. It was inferred that there was a shift towards anaerobiosis at the tissue level during sublethal intoxication by these pesticides. |
