Summary: | The experimental findings of a data intensive in situ landfill monitoring study are given. The study was undertaken to improve on the data base available for future studies of landfill-generated methane gas. The methodology used to collect the data, the spatial /variability of methane percentages thus determined, and the extent to which the results variability is explainable by variations in exogenous independent variables are outlined. Particular attention is given to the sampling programme design as a means of enhancing the cost-effectiveness of future gas monitoring studies. The results show that relatively simple techniques can be utilized to give accurate results; that spatial variability of methane percentage were small in sand and that temporal variability was sizeable. Precipitation and air temperature variations failed to explain the variations. |
