Summary: | The authors have studied the relationship between sludge volume index (SVI) and biopolymer content (exocellular polymer, ECP) , under various conditions of sludge age, hydraulic retention time and iron concentration in bulking processes of activated sludge. The most significant result is the good correlation shown between settling characteristics and ECP . This can be used in the identification of bioflocculation mechanisms and the evaluation of optimal plant operating conditions. A method is described for the determination of ECP. |
