Summary: | Roles of snow and various forms of ice in the phosphorus cycle of a lake are discussed. It is pointed out that precipitation falling directly onto a lake ice sheet during the winter has a disproportionately large impact on the lake system in the spring. Phosphorus derived from snow incorporated into the ice sheet must be included if accurate estimates of spring phosphorus loading are to be made. Data from Coon Lake, Ontario, Canada are used to illustrate points made. |
