Summary: | Measurement of ammonia in polluted sea water or fresh water is important, especially in fish rearing, but existing methods for its determination are subject to serious suppression interference by many substances, including all types of amines, nitrite and amino acids, which may participate in the chain of reactions employed diverting it: some methods suffer from breakdown of amino acids to ammonia. Hydrogen sulphide, often present in anoxic waters also interferes and must be removed. The present method overcomes these difficulties by internal standard calibration, and by specific u.v. photo-activation of the required ammonia → indophenol blue reaction at low temperature. |
