Aliphatic and polyaromatic components of weathered and unweathered southern louisiana crude oil

Aliphatic and polyaromatic fractions of either weathered or unweathered Southern Louisiana Crude (SLC) oil of known avian toxicity and of unweathered SLC exhibiting no avian toxicity were analysed for individual components using high-resolution glass (WCOT) capillary gas chromatography or capillary...

description Aliphatic and polyaromatic fractions of either weathered or unweathered Southern Louisiana Crude (SLC) oil of known avian toxicity and of unweathered SLC exhibiting no avian toxicity were analysed for individual components using high-resolution glass (WCOT) capillary gas chromatography or capillary GC/MS. Weathering of SLC caused a distinct loss of C 8 to C 13 aliphatic hydrocarbons over a 36-h period. Some 88 polyaromatic hydrocarbons ranging in size from two to five rings and substituted with one to five methyl groups were present in both weathered and unweathered toxic SLC. There was no detectable loss during weathering of polyaromatic hydrocarbons having more than two rings. Analysis of the non-toxic SLC showed a distinct absence of polyaromatic hydrocarbons having more than three rings when compared to an equivalent aromatic fraction of toxic SLC. Aliphatic fractions of these two oils were virtually identical.
