Summary:In April 1962, samples of surface water were collected from the continental shelf along the northeastern coast of Venezuela between the islands of Tobago and Margarita and examined for their phytoplankton population : the distribution of the various species found is shown a table. The organisms found were mostly diatoms. the most abundant being Nitzschia delicatissima and Chaetoceros pseudocrinitus. There was a marked, though rather erratic, increase in phytoplankton concentration toward the west of the area examined.
