Summary: | Lichens are a complex association which exhibit a high degree of morphological, physiological and biochemical integration. The long term association between the bionts has resulted in the mutual adaptation of the partners so as to best meet the combined needs of the symbiosis. One consequence of this is that certain combinations of bionts will be preferred over others. It may assumed, therefore, that the degree of selectivity, as well as the mechanisms by which it is achieved, will vary to some extent between phylogenetically distinct groups of lichens. |
