Summary: | Experiments have shown that determination of the biodegradable fraction is an accurate and relatively simple method of estimating the active mass in an activated-sludge unit, and a mathematical model that has been proposed for predicting the biodegradable fraction gave results in good agreement with measured values. There was a marked similarity in active mass measurements from ATP, dehydrogenase activity, and plate count measurements. For some organic loading rates, activity per unit weight of sludge was found to be higher in units with low suspended solids than in those with high mixed-liquor suspended solids. |
