Description
Summary:The geographical position of Hong Kong on the borders of the temperate and tropical zoogeographic regions creates a fascinating assembly of littoral biotic communities when correlated with a local diversity of geomorphological and hydrological eccentricities. The expanding urban area resulting from a population that is confidently expected to reach 5.5-6.5 million by 1991 is encroaching into rural and coastal areas. Demand for low-lying flat land has resulted in official and unauthorized reclamation of shores. Coliform bacterial counts in excess of 106/100 ml have been recorded. No coastal parks, conservation areas, reserves, or code exist. Pollution of Hong Kong's seashore is described.
