Summary: | FASTER CONVERSION IS A MEANS OF ACHIEVING GREATER EFFICIENCY IN THE UTILIZATION OF EXISTING TIMBER INVENTORIES, EVEN AFTER ADJUSTMENTS FOR THE MAJOR SHORTCOMINGS IN THE DOUGLAS-FIR SUPPLY STUDY. SEVERAL THINGS CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE EFFECT OF THE PROPOSED PROGRAM ON ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY. ONE IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF BETTER DATA ON THE COSTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND OF THE BENEFITS FROM THE OUTPUTS FACILITATED BY SUCH PROTECTION. THIS DATA SHOULD BE SUPPLEMENTED BY RESEARCH TO DEFINE MORE PRECISELY THE RANGE OF UNCERTAINTY IN INVENTORY AND HARVESTING-RELATED COSTS. A BROADER RANGE OF HARVESTING ALTERNATIVES SHOULD BE DEVELOPED AND EVALUATED. IF MODIFICATIONS IN ACCELERATED HARVESTING SCHEDULES ARE MADE IN LIGHT OF THE RESULTS, THE OPPOSITION TO ACCELERATED HARVESTING WILL DIMINISH. TABLES. GRAPHS. REFERENCES. |
