Summary: | Highlights of the fifth life sciences symposium, entitled "hazardous solid wastes and their disposal" and held at the Los Alamos scientific Lab. in oct 1977, are discussed. The symposium focused on changes that are required in the disposal of hazardous solid wastes in order to comply with the resource conservation and recovery Act of 1976. The concept of bioethics is considered. Wastes from industry, agriculture, coal technologies, nuclear power, and landfills are described. Criteria for determining whether a given product or service is hazardous are examined. Major physical and biological transport pathways of hazardous Chemicals in solid waste are outlined. |
