Summary:In the buccaneer oilfield off the Texas coast, about 200 gpd of petroleum hydrocarbons, primarily alkanes, are discharged into the sea. To determine whether fish were ingesting the alkanes, either through Gill intake or through consumption of plankton and barnacles, 25 species of fish were sampled. Flesh and liver samples were taken from fish caught in August 1976 and February 1977. Alkane concentrations in muscle and liver samples of the fish are tabulated. Good evidence of petroleum alkanes was found in 13 species. Levels of petroleum alkanes were usually higher in liver samples than in muscle samples.
