Description
Summary:From January 1982 to June 1983 the authors studied the susceptibility to antibiotics of 387 Enterobacteriaceae isolated in our intensive care unit. Thirty percent were resistant to TMP-SMZ. Subgroup analysis with regard to the susceptibility or resistance to TMP-SMZ was performed. The use of TMP-SMZ prophylaxis in neutropenic patients rests on the following two assumptions: TMP-SMZ might reduce the risk of infection and also the rate of infectious morbidity and mortality without allowing infection due to multiresistant strains. Probable increased resistance of Enterobacteriaceae to TMP-SMZ in the future will greatly reduce the benefits of such prophylaxis.
