Summary: | The authors have simulated the conditions that fish would encounter during dredging to ascertain whether chemical pollutants associated with bottom sediments are accumulated by them during exposure to a slurry of contaminated sediments. The results show that several common environmental contaminants can be accumulated by fish directly from resuspended sediments. It is suggested that PCB are accumulated directly from the water after release from sediments and that particles taken into the gills are absorbed by the gill tissue. The information provided by the study is used to make recommendations on the use of bioavailability tests to evaluate sediment quality and proposed dredging operations. |
