Summary: | Human milk samples collected in Hawaii were analyzed for residues of chlorinated hydrocarbons. Whether Hawaiian milk samples are similarly exposed to chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminants as human milk samples from other states was a highlight of the study. Milk samples were collected up to one month post partum. Most of the 54 donors resided on the Island of Oahu where the majority of the state's population is located. Chemical analysis included a multiresidue analysis and included the target chlorinated hydrocarbon residues P,P'-DDT, O,P'ddt, P,P'-DDE, O,P-DDE, P,P' DDD, lindane, dieldrin, heptachlor epoxide, HCB, mirex, aldrin, oxychlorodane, Trans-nonachlor, and PCBs. Chlorinated hydrocarbon residues in Hawaiian human milk were statistically the same residues found in mainland human milk samples. ( 3 reference, 2 table) |
