Selenite toxicity and mercury-selenium interactions in juvenile fish [Catostomus commersoni]

Results are presented from studies to determine the acute toxicity of selenium to three species of fish - white suckers (Catostomus commersoni), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and northern pike (Esox lucius). The LC50 values were 29.5 and 11 mg selenium per litre respectively. The presence of sele...

Description
Summary:Results are presented from studies to determine the acute toxicity of selenium to three species of fish - white suckers (Catostomus commersoni), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and northern pike (Esox lucius). The LC50 values were 29.5 and 11 mg selenium per litre respectively. The presence of selenium was shown to reduce mercury uptake, and the possibility of using selenium to treat surface waters polluted with mercury is discussed.
