The effects of heavy metal contamination on the aquatic biota of Buttle lake and the Campbell River drainage (Canada)

Description
Summary:Concentrations of copper and zinc in a series of large oligotrophic lakes on Vancouver Island have increased since mining operations began nearby in 1966. Decline in species diversity of phytoplankton and periphyton have resulted from the mining and such metal-sensitive forms as asterionella and rhizosolenia have disappeared. Species diversity increases as metal concentrations decline downstream from the mine. Specific sublethal deleterious effects have not yet been determined.
