Summary: | Cadmium, lead and nickel were added to 16 types of calcareous soil. Corn was grown for one month in these soils, 6 months after addition of the metals. The corn plants were analysed for cadmium, lead, nickel, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc. Total and diethelene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) extractable concentrations of these metals were also determined in the experimental soils. Cadmium, lead and nickel concentrations varied in the corn plants; cadmium accumulated in higher amounts, followed by lead and nickel. There was no significant correlation between concentrations of nickel, lead and iron in corn plants and the DTPA-extractable levels in the soils, and the confidence limits for the other metals (other than cadmium) were wide. It was concluded that the DTPA soil test may not predict plant-available micronutrients in contaminated soils. |
