Summary: | The chromosomal damaging effects of monocrotophos, an organophosphate pesticide, were studied in human lymphocyte cultures. Aberrations observed include chromatid breaks, gaps, deletions, fragments, exchanges, dicentrics, and endoreduplications. A dose-dependent increase was observed in the frequency of gaps and breaks with a corresponding increase in duration of exposure. A significant increase in sister chromatid exchanges at all concentrations and at different time intervals reveals that chromosomes are sensitive to damage by the compound. Sister chromatid exchanges are a more sensitive indicator than chromosomal aberrations. |
