Formation of trialkyl phosphorothioate esters from organophosphorus insecticides after exposure to either ultraviolet light or sunlight
The phosphoramidothioate insecticides, methyl parathion, methidathion, azinphos-methyl, fenthion and malathion, and a phosphoramidothioate, acephate, were irradiated as thin films with either sunlight or ultraviolet light. Following irradiation, the samples were analyzed for the presence of trimethy...

Summary: | The phosphoramidothioate insecticides, methyl parathion, methidathion, azinphos-methyl, fenthion and malathion, and a phosphoramidothioate, acephate, were irradiated as thin films with either sunlight or ultraviolet light. Following irradiation, the samples were analyzed for the presence of trimethyl phosphorothioate and dithioate esters. These compounds were detected in all of the samples with the exception of acephate, and the levels of the products were related to the UV extinction coefficient and absortion maxima of the insecticide. Based on the recommended field use rates of these insecticides, photoalteration products are not expected to pose a toxic hazard to farm workers. |
