Description
Summary:Juvenile Tilapia aurea were exposed to 6.8, 14, 28 and 52 ug cadmium per litre (measured concentrations) for 16 weeks. There were no effects on fish survival, growth, total moisture content, fat content, protein content, ash content, or haemoglobin concentration. A dose related decrease in haematocrit values was observed after 10 weeks' exposure but not after 16 weeks. Cadmium concentrations in the muscle of treated fish increased with exposure concentration, and ranged from 0.12 mg per kg in the 6.8 ug per litre group to 0.92 mg per kg in the 52 ug per litre group (control value 0.06 mg per kg). Although few national and international authorities had set limits for cadmium in foodstuff, Norway and the Netherlands were reported to have set a limit of 0.5 mg per kg, a value exceeded in fish from the 28 and 52 ug cadmium per litre treatment groups.
