Summary: | Municipal refuse stabilization in sanitary landfills gives rise to polluting leachates. The stabilization process is explained with reference to the naturally occurring decomposition phases of the refuse. Each phase is distinguished by a characteristic leachate composition, and analytical monitoring can reflect the end-products of the physicochemical and microbial decomposition processes at work. Chemical leachate data from a landfill site near Cape Town, South Africa, are described to illustrate the various attenuation mechanisms associated with landfills. |
