Description
Summary:This article presents the results of research into the life and achievements of Francois Garnier (d.1760), a Parisian "ebeniste" whose period of activity spanned much of the first half of the 18C. It draws on a wide range of archival sources to correct fanciful and confused earlier biographical accounts and builds on C. Huchet de Quenetain's research, published in 2006, to provide a more definitive study. Francois Garnier's works bear witness to changes in the domain of the French decorative arts, and to the various influences to which these were subject, changes and influences which indirectly reflected wider political and social developments. It was in this period that a distinction was established between "menuisiers" and "ebenistes", and when the most important "ebenisterie" workshops, including that of Francois Garnier, began to collaborate with the "marchands-merciers". Several Parisian dynasties of "maitres menuisiers-ebenistes" were active in the 18C including those of Boulle, Van Risamburgh, Gaudreaus, Vandercruse, Dubois, and Garnier. The special interest attaching to Francois Garnier arises from research which has firmly established the distinction between his works and those of his son, Pierre. Francois Garnier's career was less conspicuously successful than his son's. His works reflected the various stylistic developments from "Regence" to "Louis XV". (Quotes from original text)
