Summary:The masterpiece of Peter Mathias Van Gelder (c.1742-1809) his monument to Mary, 3rd Duchess of Montagu (died 1775), in the chancel of St Edmund's Church, Warkton, Northamptonshire has been neglected in modern scholarship, in spite of its extraordinary theatrical "mise en scène", unusual iconography and technical brilliance. This article aims to publish new documents for the monument's erection and to analyse its facture. Van Gelder's previously unidentified alterations to monuments by Louis François Roubiliac are also noticed.
