Description
Summary:Our previous results from studies of thioredoxin-1 (Trx-1) expression in various parts of the hippocampus 3 and 24 h after three sessions of moderate hypoxia were compared with expression at the same times after single sessions of hypoxia. One and three episodes of moderate hypobaric hypoxia were found to have similar effects on Trx-1 expression. The observation that the neuroprotective effects after subsequent severe acute hypobaric hypoxia were significantly different suggested that the state of hypoxic tolerance of neurons is not determined by the “baseline” level of antioxidant expression itself, but that more complex mechanisms may operate. These mechanisms may be associated with the wavelike oscillations in Trx-1 expression during preconditioning seen here.
