Summary: | In 1987-88, the Seattle/King County Department of Public Health conducted a study of infectious waste disposal in King County, Wash., to assess current medical facility practices and the risks posed by infectious wastes to human health. A medical waste survey and facility inspection were conducted at 26 hospitals and 22 medical offices to determine how infectious waste is being defined, treated and disposed. The solid waste stream also was observed, from facility waste storage areas to final landfill disposal, to identify common pathways for human exposure.A contemporary literature review was conducted to determine risks posed by infectious waste in transmitting disease to humans. |
