Summary: | Methane emissions from test plots at the Rice Research Station in Louisiana were evaluated over the growing season and related to three levels of urea fertilization and environmental factors. Urea granules were applied onto the dry soil surface 2 h before permanent flood at 100, 200, and 300 kg nitrogen/ha. Gas sampling was initiated prior to permanent flood and was concluded 1 d before harvest. Methane emissions varied widely over the study period, but followed the same seasonal pattern. Methane emissions increased according to the amount of urea that had been applied and as soil redox potentials decreased. Soil temperature data did not correlate well with observed emission rates. |
