Summary: | A new genus of Tetraonycini, Opiomeloe, is proposed for Tetraonyx flavipennis Guérin-Méneville, which is redescribed from adult material collected in Cundinamarca, Colombia. In adult characters the genus is intermediate between Tetraonyx Latreille and the blind, flightless Meloetyphlus Waterhouse. Evidence from comparative anatomy suggests that Opiomeloe is the closest known relative of Meloetyphlus and that the Opiomeloe-Meloetyphlus line evolved either directly from Tetraonyx or from an immediate common ancestor with that genus. |
