Summary: | The threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus , is a complex of biological species and morphologically diverse allopatric populations of uncertain systematic status. It is widely distributed in temperate and subarctic coastal marine and fresh waters of the Northern Hemisphere. In eastern North America, it occurs in marine water south to Chesapeake Bay, but generally is absent from fresh water south of Maine. Extensive geographical and intrapopulation variation of morphological features have been reported throughout much of its range, particularly for lateral plate morphology. |
