Description
Summary:Linear alkylbenzenesulfonate (LAS) behavior was characterized at a USGS research site during trickling filter sewage treatment, infiltration to groundwater, and groundwater transport using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC/FL) and fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB/MS). More than 96% of LAS was removed from the aqueous phase during sewage treatment, and another 3% was removed during infiltration. Therefore, groundwater LAS concentrations were below detection with HPLC/FL. FAB/MS revealed trace levels of LAS in groundwater up to 500 m downgradient from infiltration. The reaction by-products of LAS synthesis, dialkyltetralinsulfonates, were found to be in comparable concentrations to LAS in groundwater.
