More than 96% of LAS was removed from the aqueous phase during sewage treatment, and another 3% was removed during infiltration. Therefore, groundwater LAS concentrations were below detection with HPLC/FL. FAB/MS revealed trace levels of LAS in groundwater up to 500 m downgradient from infiltration. The reaction by-products of LAS synthesis, dialkyltetralinsulfonates, were found to be in comparable concentrations to LAS in groundwater.
