super(137)Cs in Sediments of Utah Lakes and Reservoirs: Effects of Elevation, Sedimentation Rate and Fallout History

Summary: | Sediments from 15 impoundments in Utah, two in Oregon, and one in Colorado were analyzed for cesium 137 to determine areas that may have been impacted by fallout from weapons tests at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Evidence pointed to enhanced fallout super(137)Cs deposition during 1951-57, the period of most intense aboveground testing at NTS, at two sites in southwestern Utah. However, most of the observed radionuclide accumulation in sediments deposited during this period could be attributed to global rather than NTS fallout. Differences between sites in the relative deposition from NTS fallout could not be statistically proven. |
