Summary: | At coniferous forest sites in Ireland, the UK, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, nitrous oxide emissions from the soil were measured prior to and after the addition of nitrate and acetate. Direct N sub(2)O emissions were low in all soils examined, ranging 0.02 2.2 mg/m super(2)/d. Generally, the addition of acetate alone did not affect the rate of denitrification, except at one of the Danish sites. When nitrate and acetate were added together, however, the daily rate of denitrification increased up to 8.8 mg N sub(2)O N/m super(2) at one site. |
