Summary: | The European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model (ERSEM)-a comprehensive ecosystem model that dynamically simulates the large-scale cycling of organic carbon, oxygen, and micronutrients over the seasonal cycle in the North Sea-and the MIKE21 EU model, which describes advection dispersion, oxygen dynamics, and C/nutrient cycling in the lower trophic levels, are described and used to model eutrophication of the North Sea. The models are compared in terms of spatial scale resolution, hydrodynamical resolution, hydrodynamical boundary conditions, advection dispersion, ecology, and model limitations. Modeling results are presented to show that ERSEM is better used to address how eutrophication may affect the large-scale behavior of the North Sea, while MIKE21 EU can be used to determine where eutrophication may be affecting system behavior. |
